On Linux
I'm very pleased with my Linux workstation. I just installed Photoshop 6,
using Crossover Office (a $40 souped up improvement on WINE). The Windows
applications that I have added to the menu include: Microsoft Word 2000, Excel
2000, Powerpoint 97 Viewer, Word 97 Viewer, and Excel 97 Viewer, plus Taxcut
2002 and Adobe Photoshop 6.
When I use Windows (my laptop runs Windows 2000 Server, except when it freezes
after about 2-3 hours of use; I suspect the video driver but can find no
solution) I feel as though everything has been defaulted for me; I have no
power over the computer. Things happen that I can't control or configure.
Linux is completely under my control, though I do admit I don't know everything
about the system yet; I simply trust Redhat that some of these processes are
doing their job correctly, e.g. pam, smartd, etc.
The one application I'd love to run under Linux is Dreamweaver, because I like
to have a quick and easy way to set up web sites. I have hand coded a few
sites (www.tastysoftware.com) and generated a few (www.terryandrebecca.org) and
both approaches have their advantages. DW is best of class right now but they
haven't done the work to make it run in Linux even in the emulator. Probably
coming soon, though.
